Since consultation dialogue with residents, politicians and the media is now an integral part of the planning system, it must be used as effectively as possible. It should start at the pre-application stage and continue until a decision is made.
Early consultation and action in responding to local issues and concerns builds understanding of the benefits of a project and a client's reputation, helps to break down barriers, and deals with misconceptions. It strengthens the client's case and weakens opposition. Skilled consultants identify the right people to communicate with and influence, establish what is important to them and present each client's case in clear and concise layman's terms.
